OTD: Jason Krejza took eight wickets on debut in Nagpur

OTD Jason Krejza took eight wickets on debut in Nagpur

India might have won the final Test of the four-match series in 2008 and hence the series, but the contest at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur will be forever remembered for Jason Krejza’s international debut in which he recorded match figures of 12/358 (8/215 and 4/143).

Apart from the wickets of Murali Vijay and Sachin Tendulkar, Krejza dismissed the Indian batting unit all by humself. He came back excellently well after getting hit for 32 runs in his first three overs to get rid of Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. The off-spinner’s next wicket came in his 22nd over.

On Day 2, his 40th over resulted in the wickets of set batters MS Dhoni (56 off 97) and Sourav Ganguly (85 off 153). Shortly after, he rolled over the tail to end up with total eight wickets to his name. Despite the stellar debut, it was a bittersweet performance, as Krejza conceded more runs in an innings than anyone in their maiden Test performance.

Australia ended up conceding an 86-run first innings lead after getting bowled out for 355. Krejza picked up four in India’s second innings, as the hosts folded for 295. This included a two-in-two strike with wickets of VVS Laxman and Ganguly. Australia were set up a target of 382 but the tourists got all-out for 209. Despite the 172-run defeat, Krejza was awarded the Player of the Match award.
