OTD in 1988: Carlos Brathwaite was born

OTD in 1988 Carlos Brathwaite was born

When cricket fans think of unforgettable moments, one innings instantly comes to mind. Carlos Brathwaite smashing Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes in the final over of the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup final remains one of the greatest finishes in cricket history. As the fourth six sailed into the stands at Eden Gardens, commentator Ian Bishop delivered the iconic words: “Carlos Brathwaite, remember the name!”

Born on July 18, 1988, in Barbados, Brathwaite’s journey to that magical night was far from easy. A pace-bowling all-rounder, he first caught attention during his debut first-class season in 2011. Playing against Trinidad and Tobago, he claimed 7/90 in the second innings and finished the season with 26 wickets in eight matches. His performances earned him a place in the West Indies squad for the tour of Bangladesh, where he made his T20I and ODI debuts.

However, his international career did not take off immediately. After just a couple of matches, Brathwaite was dropped and had to wait more than three years for another opportunity. He returned to the national side during the 2014-15 season and slowly established himself.

Brathwaite made his Test debut against Australia in Melbourne in December 2015. Although he went wicketless with the ball, he impressed with the bat, scoring a fighting 59 on debut. He followed it up with a quick 69 off 71 balls in the next Test at Sydney.

Everything changed a few months later in Kolkata. West Indies needed 19 runs from the final over to beat England in the 2016 T20 World Cup final. Facing Ben Stokes, Brathwaite produced one of the greatest finishing acts in cricket, hitting four consecutive sixes to seal the title. He remained unbeaten on 34 off just 10 balls and helped West Indies lift their second T20 World Cup trophy.

That unforgettable knock made Brathwaite a household name. He was picked up by the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL for ₹4.2 crore and later played for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Although he could not consistently replicate his World Cup heroics in the IPL, he remained a useful all-rounder in franchise cricket.

Another memorable performance came during the 2019 ODI World Cup against New Zealand. Chasing 292, Brathwaite played a sensational knock of 101 off 82 balls and almost pulled off an unbelievable win before being dismissed with just six runs needed. It remains his only international century.

In his international career, Brathwaite played 3 Tests, 44 ODIs, and 41 T20Is, scoring 1,050 runs and taking 75 wickets across formats. While his overall numbers may not be extraordinary, his impact on West Indies cricket goes far beyond statistics.

In recent years, Brathwaite has continued playing franchise cricket around the world, featuring in leagues like the CPL, PSL, BPL, and The Hundred. He has also built a successful career as a commentator and presenter.

For cricket fans, though, Carlos Brathwaite will always be remembered for that unforgettable night at Eden Gardens. With a World Cup on the line, he produced one of the greatest finishes the game has ever seen. Ian Bishop’s famous commentary still rings true today: “Carlos Brathwaite, remember the name!”
