OTD in 1977: David Hussey was born

OTD in 1977 David Hussey was born

While Michael Hussey earned the nickname “Mr. Cricket” for his remarkable achievements with Australia, his younger brother, David Hussey, carved out an impressive cricketing career of his own. Although he never enjoyed the same level of international success, David established himself as one of the most dependable middle-order batters in domestic and T20 cricket across the globe.

Born on July 15, 1977, in Mount Lawley, Western Australia, David Hussey became a familiar name in franchise cricket long before T20 leagues became a worldwide phenomenon. A right-handed batter who could also contribute with handy off-spin, Hussey built a reputation for his aggressive strokeplay, finishing ability, and versatility.

Like his elder brother, David had to wait patiently for his opportunity at the international level. Years of consistent performances in Australia’s domestic circuit and county cricket eventually earned him a national call-up.

He went on to represent Australia in 69 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 39 T20 Internationals (T20Is), scoring over 2,500 international runs across the two white-ball formats. In ODIs, he amassed 1,796 runs at an average of 32.65, including one century and 14 half-centuries. His highest score of 111 showcased his ability to anchor an innings while accelerating when needed.

In T20Is, Hussey scored 756 runs in 39 matches, striking at over 121. His fearless batting made him one of Australia’s trusted middle-order options during the early years of international T20 cricket.

One of his finest knocks came against South Africa in 2009, when he smashed an unbeaten 88 off just 44 balls. He also played a memorable innings during the 2010 T20 World Cup, hammering 53 off 29 deliveries against Pakistan to help Australia post a competitive total.

While David’s international career had its ups and downs, his domestic record spoke volumes about his consistency.

He was a prolific run-scorer for Victoria and later captained the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL), becoming one of the franchise’s most influential players in the competition’s early years.

Hussey was equally successful in franchise cricket around the world. He featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, and Chennai Super Kings, scoring 1,322 runs in 64 matches. His ability to finish games and score quickly made him a valuable asset for every team he represented.

Apart from the IPL, Hussey also played in several T20 leagues across different countries, establishing himself as one of the most sought-after overseas professionals during the format’s rise.

David Hussey made an excellent start to his ODI career, scoring two consecutive half-centuries against the West Indies. After his early success, Hussey struggled to produce consistent performances at the international level. He crossed the fifty-run mark only three times in his next 18 ODI innings, and following a modest home series against Sri Lanka in 2013, the selectors decided to move on.

Although his international career ended earlier than many had expected, David Hussey’s contribution to the game remains significant. From dominating domestic cricket to becoming a respected figure in franchise leagues around the world, he proved that success isn’t measured only by international numbers.
