OTD: Glenn Maxwell was born in 1988

It was on this day, October 14, in 1988, that Glenn Maxwell was born in Kew, Melbourne, Victoria, in Australia. He made his Australia debut in 2012 and became famous for his powerful batting, effective off-spin bowling, and excellent fielding abilities.

As a batting all-rounder, Maxwell has made substantial contributions to Australian cricket in all formats. Maxwell made his ODI debut against Afghanistan in 2012 and his T20I debut against Pakistan in 2012, while his Test debut came in 2013 against India.

His Test career remained brief, as he made 339 runs at an average of 26.07 in seven Tests, including one century, with the best score of 104.

However, Maxwell excelled in ODIs and T20Is. He scored 3990 runs at an average of 33.81 and strike rate of 126.70 in 149 ODIs, including four centuries and 23 fifties. In T20Is, he made 2833 runs at a strike rate of 156, including five centuries and 12 fifties, with the best score of 145*.

With the ball, he has 77 wickets at an economy of 4.42 in 149 ODIs, with best bowling figures of 4/40, while he has 49 wickets at an economy of 8.71 in 124 T20Is, with best bowling figures of 3/10.

Maxwell holds the record for most centuries in T20I, alongside Suryakumar Yadav in India with five tons. Maxwell also played arguably the best innings in ODI cricket, which came in the 2023 World Cup in the match between Australia and Afghanistan.

Chasing 291 runs in Mumbai, Australia stared at defeat at 91/7, but then Pat Cummins held up one end, scoring 12* in 68 balls, while Maxwell hammered 201* in 128 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes, batting mostly on one leg with severe cramps.  

He has announced his retirement from ODIs but will be available for Australia for the T20 World Cup 2026.

Maxwell has also had an exceptional T20 career, with 2819 runs in 141 IPL games, and has scored 3241 runs in 118 BBL games.
