OTD: George Bailey was born in 1982

Former Australia captain George Bailey was born on this day, September 7, 1982, in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. George Bailey played for Tasmania in Australian domestic cricket. He also played for Scotland, Hampshire, and Sussex in domestic cricket.

A destructive batter, Bailey made his Tasmania debut in the 2005/06 season. He was earmarked as a leader and captain from his early days and even made his T20I debut as Australia’s captain in 2012. Bailey’s ODI debut came in 2010 in New Zealand when Michael Clarke returned home for personal reasons.

His highest point as an Australian ODI player and captain came in the 2013 series in India. He smacked 478 runs in the seven-game series and also made his highest ODI score of 156 in the sixth ODI.

Bailey’s Australia Test debut came in 2013 in that year’s Ashes, and in the third Test of the series in Perth, he hammered James Anderson for 28 runs in an over, equalling Brian Lara’s then record for most runs in an over in Tests. His Test career remained brief, with 183 runs in five Tests, including one fifty.

However, in ODIs, Bailey made 3044 an average of 40.56 runs with three centuries and 22 fifties 90 games, with a best of 156. He also played 30 T20Is, scoring 473 runs with two fifties.

Bailey had a decent Australia captaincy stint as well, winning 16 ODIs out of 29 and 14 T20Is out of 28 he captained in.

His captaincy skills also helped him in the Indian Premier League, as he captained Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) to the final for the first time in their IPL history in 2014. He played 40 IPL matches, scoring 663 runs with two fifties.

He continued playing First-Class cricket until 2019, while his last T20 game came in BBL 2020. Bailey has since transitioned from cricketer to Australian team selector, replacing Mark Waugh at the helm.
