OTD: Farveez Maharoof was born in 1984

Farveez Maharoof, former Sri Lanka all-rounder, was born on this day, September 7, in 1984. He was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

At the age of eight, he began playing cricket in addition to rugby and football. During his undergraduate years, Maharoof was a wicketkeeper-batter. He first started bowling frequently while he was playing under-13 cricket.

He was captain of the Sri Lankan U19 team in the 2004 Youth World Cup. He was part of the Sri Lanka A team that toured India for a tri-series involving India A and Pakistan A. He picked nine wickets and was Player of the Match in the final, helping Sri Lanka A win the series.

Maharoof made his Sri Lanka ODI and Test debut in 2004, against Zimbabwe, while his T20I debut came in 2006 against England. The 6 ft 3 in tall cricketer Maharoof was a powerful batter, capable of hitting the big shots with ease. With the ball, he focused more on line and length instead of pace and was more of a medium pacer.

Maharoof went on to play 22 Tests, 109 ODIs, and eight T20Is for Sri Lanka, scoring 556, 1113 and 33 runs in the three formats, respectively. With the ball, he took 25 wickets in Tests, 135 in ODIs, and seven in T20Is. He also has an ODI hat-trick to his name, which came against India in the 2010 Asia Cup.

Maharoof also played 20 games for Delhi Capitals in the IPL from 2008 to 2010 and picked 27 wickets at an average of 19.25 and economy of 7.42.
