OTD | England won their maiden ODI World Cup in 2019

OTD England won their maiden ODI World Cup in 2019

England won their maiden ODI World Cup at the Home of Cricket in Lord’s, which is arguably the greatest match in the history of the sport, on July 14, 2019. After failing to win the title right from their first attempt in 1975, England finally managed to achieve the feat, thanks to a great effort from all players throughout the tournament.

Batting first, New Zealand posted 241/8 on the board. Henry Nicholls 55(77) and Tom Latham 47(56) were the standout batters, with some decent contributions from others, including 30 extras. A lack of intent from New Zealand batters would eventually cost them the game.

For England, Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett were the pick of the bowlers with their 3/37 and 3/42, respectively. Chasing the total, England was reduced to 86/4 after 23.1 overs and had a task cut out. That’s when Jos Buttler’s underrated 59(60) helped them to revive the innings.

However, his dismissal led to a collapse, as England were reduced to 227/8 from 196/4. Ben Stokes’ acceleration helped England to tie the game amidst a lot of drama. His 84(98) included five fours and two sixes. The match went to the super over, which was the first such instance in a World Cup final.

England batted first and managed to score 15 runs against Trent Boult. For England, Jofra Archer operated and conceded exactly the same runs, which witnessed another tie. As per the rules back in 2019, the team with more boundaries was awarded the trophy. Hence, England won the game based on the controversial boundary count rule.
