OTD: England became the first team to score 500,000 runs on the first day of a Test

England scripted history during the second Test of their 2024 tour of New Zealand by becoming the first team in the history of Test cricket to score 500,000 runs. The landmark achievement came on Day 2 of the match at the Basin Reserve in Wellington with a double by Harry Brook off the second ball of the 51st over of the English innings off the bowling of Will O’Rourke.

By the time Day 2 concluded, England’s aggregate in the red-ball format stood at 500,126 in a total of 1,082 matches. 18,954 individual innings had been played for the landmark to get shattered. No other team had scored a half-a-million Test runs at that point in time. The rest of the four at that specific juncture were England, India, West Indies and South Africa. England also led in the number of tons being scored in the format (929).

Speaking of the match in which the Three Lions brought up their 500,000th run in Tests, the tourists secured victory by a massive 323-run margin. Brook secured the Player of the Match award for his 123 and 55 in England’s first and second innings, respectively. The match got over quite quickly. There were two whole days which were not played as the Kiwis wrapped up for 125 and 259 in their respective innings.
