In 2015, Australia created history by winning the first-ever day-night Test match, defeating New Zealand by three wickets at the Adelaide Oval. Played under lights with the pink ball, the match lasted only three days. The low-scoring affair added to Australia’s record of winning milestone matches, including the first Test, first ODI, first day-night ODI, first T20I, and lastly the first day-night Test.
New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first, but Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc extracted swing and seam from the pink ball, restricting New Zealand to 202. Tom Latham (50) and Mitchell Santner (31) were the only batters to show some fight as Hazlewood, Starc, Peter Siddle, and Nathan Lyon shared the wickets.
Australia’s first innings was not the way they would have liked as they lost five early wickets, before Steven Smith (53) and Peter Nevill (66) steadied the wobbling ship. A late cameo from Nathan Lyon (34) and Mitchell Starc (24*) pushed the total to 224, giving the hosts a slender 22-run lead. Doug Bracewell was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand with 3 for 18, while Trent Boult and Mark Craig also chipped in.
New Zealand’s second innings once again witnessed a batting collapse as Australia’s Hazlewood delivered one of his best spells in Test cricket, picking up 6 for 70 to finish with nine wickets for the match. Santner added 45, and lower-order contributions pushed the score to 208, setting a target of 187.
The chase began on a positive note for the Ausseies with David Warner’s 35, but Boult trapped Joe Burns and Steven Smith lbw and later removed Adam Voges, Shaun Marsh, and Peter Nevill to finish with a brilliant five-wicket haul.
After Voges fell for 28, Marsh played a fighting knock of 49 but edged to slip with Australia still far from the target. In the end, it came down to Peter Siddle and Starc, who batted despite a fractured foot. With New Zealand crowding the slip cordon with six catchers, Siddle finally punched a delivery past point to seal the win, as Starc limped through for the final run.
