OTD | Anil Kumble's 6/12, also the best ODI figures for India, helped secure Hero Cup final in 1993

On this day in 1993, Anil Kumble’s 6/12, the best ODI figures for India. Anil Kumble, India’s former bowler, was quite outstanding with his skills. There are no teams in the world who were saved from Kumble’s wrath. He also played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2008. In 1993, the player achieved the best feat in ODI cricket, which is still a record for India.

Kumble claimed six wickets and conceded just 12 runs against West Indies in the Hero Cup final. India went on to clinch the title by 102 runs and Kumble received the Player of the Match award for his marvelous performance.

The game started with West Indies winning the toss and asking India to bat first. Well, the decision did backfire on the visitors as India scored 227 runs in the high-intensity game. The score might seem low but in a final game at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, it was equivalent to 250+ runs. Under a solid crowd, the Indian batters enjoyed batting.

Ajay Jadeja and Vinod Kambli gave the start India needed. Jadeja scored 30 runs while Kambli scored 68 runs. Captain Mohammad Azharuddin also chipped into the total, scoring 38 runs. Sachin Tendulkar, who batted down the order at that time, scored 28 runs.

Anderson Cummins was the standout bowler for West Indies, claiming three wickets. He got rid of the best batters, not allowing them to settle on the crease. Curtly Ambrose also took two wickets.

When West Indies came to bat, Indian bowlers wreaked havoc on them. Apart from Brain Lara, none of the other batters played well. He scored 33 runs, which was the highest score of the team. They were all-out for just 123 runs, losing the finals. Kumble wiped off most of the wickets, leading India towards victory.
