OTD 2024 | Bangladesh completed 2-0 whitewash in Test series against Pakistan

It was on this day, on September 3 in 2024, when Bangladesh defeated Pakistan in the second Test of the two-match series in Rawalpindi to register a historic 2-0 whitewash over the Asian giants for the first time.

The first Test was played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from August 21-25, qwhen Pakistan was asked to bat first by Bangladesh after they won the toss. Thanks to Saud Shakeel’s 141 and Mohammad Rizwan’s 171*Pakistan reached 448/6 before declaring. In response, Bangladesh made 565 runs on 191 by Mushfiqur Rahim and fifties by Shadman Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Mominul Haque.

Pakistan were then bowled out for 146 in the second innings, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz (4/21) and Shakib Al Hasan (3/44) doing the damage. Bangladesh needed only 30 runs to win, and they won the game by ten wickets to go 1-0 up in the series.

The series was on the line when the second Test began on August 30 at the same venue. Pakistan were put into bat after Bangladesh won the toss again. Saim Ayub, Shan Masood, and Salman Agha made half-centuries as they posted 274 in the first innings even as Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 5/61, while Taskin Ahmed took three wickets.

Then Mir Hamza and Khurram Shahzad routed the Bangladesh batting, leaving them 26/6 at one stage. An easy win looked on the horizon for Pakistan, but then Litton Das made 138 and Mehidy Hasan made 78 to bring Bangladesh back into the game, posting 262 runs in the first innings. Khurram Shahzad picked 6/90 for Pakistan.

Holding a slim lead, Pakistan was expected to post a huge total in the second innings to give a stiff target to Bangladesh. However, the hosts only managed 172 runs, with Salman Agha’s 47* and Mohammad Rizwan’s 43 being the best score. Hasan Mahmud picked 5/43, while Nahid Rana took four wickets.

Needing 185 runs to win the second Test, the Bangladeshi batters contributed big time. Zakir Hasan made 40, Najmul Hossain Shanto made 38, and Mominul Haque made 34, as Bangladesh achieved the target with six wickets in hand. They won the Test and whitewashed Pakistan for the first time in Tests.

Litton Das was named the Player of the Match, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz was named the Player of the Series.
