OTD 1979: Imran Tahir Born – Celebrating the Proteas Spin Legend

OTD 1979: Imran Tahir Born – Celebrating the Proteas Spin Legend

Imran Tahir was born in Lahore, Punjab, on March 27, 1979. He is renowned for his energetic celebrations, mastery of the googly and went on to become one of the finest leg-spinners to represent South Africa across all three formats of international cricket.

Although he began his cricketing journey in Pakistan, representing Pakistan Under-19s and Pakistan A, Tahir did not break into the senior national side. In 2005, at the age of 26, he moved to South Africa and eventually qualified to play for the Proteas. His journey wasn’t straightforward. In January 2010, he was initially named in South Africa’s Test squad against England but was withdrawn a day later due to eligibility issues. However, he persevered and soon established himself as a key figure in their bowling attack.

Tahir made a significant impact in limited-overs cricket. In June 2016, he became the first South African bowler to claim seven wickets in an ODI innings, while also becoming the fastest from his country to reach 100 ODI wickets, achieving the milestone in just 58 matches. He continued to break records, becoming the fastest South African to 50 T20I wickets in February 2017. Just a month later, against New Zealand, he recorded one of the most economical spells by a South African spinner in ODIs, taking 2/14 in 10 overs.

In October 2018, Tahir etched his name in history by becoming only the fourth South African to take a hat-trick in ODIs. Ahead of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, he announced that he would retire from ODI cricket after the tournament, bringing an end to a remarkable chapter in his career.

Tahir also enjoyed a highly successful T20 career across the globe. In the Indian Premier League, he played a crucial role for Chennai Super Kings, especially in 2019 when he picked up 26 wickets to win the Purple Cap. His franchise career extended to leagues around the world, including stints in England, South Africa, and the Caribbean. Notably, he represented his eighth English county when he joined Surrey in 2019, setting a unique record.

In the Caribbean Premier League, Tahir captained the Guyana Amazon Warriors to their maiden title in 2023, marking another milestone in his illustrious career. He also made history in The Hundred by taking the first-ever hat-trick in the competition while playing for Birmingham Phoenix in 2021.

Over his international career, Tahir played 20 Tests, picking up 57 wickets, alongside 173 wickets in 107 ODIs and 63 wickets in 38 T20Is. Across all T20 competitions, he amassed an astonishing 572 wickets.
