These players have tackled India’s world-class bowlers and have also honed their skills of scoring runs in subcontinental conditions as well as overseas.

One of England’s finest Test openers, Sir Alastair Cook, produced some of his most memorable performances against India. In 30 Tests, Cook scored 2431 runs at an average of 47.66, including seven centuries and nine fifties. His debut century also came against India in Nagpur in 2006, and he also ended his career with a ton against the same opponents in his final Test at The Oval in 2018. In Indian conditions, the southpaw scored 1235 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 51.45.

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting enjoyed a solid run against India. In 29 Tests, he hammered 2555 runs at an average of 54.36, including eight centuries and 12 fifties. In India, he managed to score 662 runs in 14 matches. Meanwhile, his career-best of 257 came against India at the MCG in 2003, helping Australia level the series. Ponting also hit a sublime 242 in Adelaide earlier that season and a memorable 221 in 2012 in his final series. His 141* at Sydney in 2000 sealed a 3-0 sweep for Australia, while his 140 in the 2008 Adelaide Test ensured a draw.

Former England Test captain Joe Root achieved a record-breaking feat in the ongoing Test series against India. The right-handed batter became the first cricketer ever to score over 3000 runs against the team in red-ball cricket. The veteran reached the milestone in the Lord’s Test. Root has so far played 33 Test matches against India and has 11 centuries and 12 half-centuries. His ton in the third Test saw him record his 37th century in this format. The 34-year-old has so far recorded 3059 runs against the Indian team.
