Lowest victory margin at Lord’s (By runs, Top 3)

Lowest victory margin at Lord’s (By runs, Top 3)

England secured the narrowest ever Test victory by runs at Lord’s when they defeated India by just 22 runs in the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Monday, July 14. Defending a modest second-innings total of 192, England pulled off a remarkable win while adding their name to the record books. Here, let us take a look at the top three lowest victory margins (by runs) at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.

England vs India (22 runs)

In a tense third Test, England edged past India by just 22 runs, now the lowest ever margin of victory by runs at Lord’s. England posted 387 in their first innings, with Joe Root scoring a sublime 104. Jasprit Bumrah picked up a five-wicket haul in response. India matched the total exactly, ending their innings also at 387 with the help of KL Rahul’s composed century (100).

England, in their second innings, were bundled out for 192, with Washington Sundar claiming four wickets. Chasing 193, India showed grit, especially from the lower order, with Ravindra Jadeja scoring an unbeaten 61. However, the pitch offered several variations on Day 5, and England managed to bowl India out for 170, sealing a thrilling 22-run victory.

England vs Australia (43 runs)

In the second Ashes Test of 2023, Australia defeated England by 43 runs in another memorable Lord’s contest. Australia scored 416 in the first innings, powered by Steve Smith’s 110. England replied with 325, with Ben Duckett falling just short of a century on 98.

Australia posted 279 in their second innings, setting England a target of 371. Stuart Broad took four wickets during that innings. England came close, thanks to a heroic 155 from Ben Stokes, but the rest of the batting collapsed under pressure from the Australian pace trio, and the hosts were bowled out for 327.

England vs South Africa (51 runs)

South Africa claimed a 51-run win over England at Lord’s in 2012, then one of the closest finishes at the venue. The Proteas scored 309 in their first innings, with Steven Finn taking fours wickets. England responded with 315, where Jonny Bairstow impressed with 95.

South Africa built a strong second innings total of 351, driven by Hashim Amla’s 121. Finn took another four-wicket haul. England were set a target of 346, but the chase fell short as Vernon Philander dismantled the hosts with a five-wicket haul, bowling England out for 294.
