IPL 2025: 3 reasons why Punjab Kings lost to Delhi Capitals

IPL 2025: 3 reasons why Punjab Kings lost to Delhi Capitals

Punjab Kings lost a last-over thriller against Delhi Capitals in match number 66 of the Indian Premier League 2025

Delhi Capitals won the toss at Sawai Mansingh Stadium and chose to bowl first. After being sent into bat, Punjab Kings set a formidable target by scoring 206 runs. Shreyas Iyer was the standout performer with the bat, with his 53 runs. Additionally, Jos Inglis and Marcus Stoinis made valuable contributions with quick innings of 32 and 44 runs, respectively. However, the Punjab Kings bowling unit failed to defend the gargantuan target as Delhi Capitals chased it down in the last over. The chase can be attributed to equal contributions by all batters in Delhi’s batting line-up.

Here is the list of three main reasons why Punjab Kings lost to Delhi Capitals:

3. Mukesh Kumar’s dismal performance

In the absence of Mitchel Starc, Mukesh Kumar spearheaded Delhi’s bowling unit. The right-arm pacer not only failed to contain runs but also didn’t pick up any wickets. In his quota of four overs, the bowler conceded 49 runs at an economy rate of 12 runs an over. His inability to pick up wickets allowed Punjab Kings to put up such a mammoth target on the board.

2. No show from the all-rounder

Afghanistan’s all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai failed with both bat and bowl in this fixture. The right handed batter threw away his wicket in the death overs scoring only one run. With the ball in his hand, Omarzai conceded 46 runs in his four overs without picking up any wickets.

1. Impact player made no impact

Punjab Kings introduced Praveen Dubey as their impact substitute in hopes of using his leg spin services. However, the leggie didn’t even complete his quota of four overs. He scalped a wicket after conceding 20 runs in his two-over spell. Question may be raised on the management regarding his selection as an impact substitute when the player wasn’t even allowed to bowl his four overs.
