Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2025 campaign ended with a heartbreaking 20-run defeat against Mumbai Indians in the tournament’s Eliminator clash. Shubman Gill’s men failed to chase down the target of 229 runs, as they were restricted to the score of 208 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the entire 20 overs.
Notably, the Titans were easily heading towards the target, owing to the brilliant knocks played by Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar. But still, they failed to chase the target and eventually fell short by 21 runs, losing the game by 20 runs, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.
With that said, here we’ll have a look at the 3 reasons why GT lost to Mumbai Indians in the eliminator.
Poor fielding in the first innings
One of the major reasons behind Gujarat’s downfall against MI in the eliminator was their poor fielding in the first innings. Gerald Coetzee and wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis dropped two catches, and that too of the veteran MI batter Rohit Sharma. These two dropped chances happened to cost GT a lot, as Rohit went on to smash 81 runs off just 50 balls, with nine fours and a six.
Besides the dropped chance of Rohit Sharma, GT debutant, Kusal Mendis also dropped another catch behind the wickets. So, these failed attempts were the few big reasons behind GT’s lack throughout the entire game against MI.
Poor bowling in the death overs
Apart from the dismal display of fielding, GT bowlers also conceded a lot of unnecessary runs in the death overs. Notably, MI had scored 188 runs for the loss of 3 wickets at the end of the 17th over in the first innings. But what happened next was something that went on to cost them the entire match.
The MI’s pace trio of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gerald Coetzee conceded 40 runs in the last three overs, with an expensive run rate of 13.33. It also included the 22-run 20th over bowled by Gerald Coetzee, in which MI skipper Hardik Pandya smashed 3 sixes.
Batting fumble during run chase
Gujarat Titans were strongly heading towards the target when they had scored 170 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 15.3 overs. But then the dismissal happened of the star in-form batter B Sai Sudharsan (80 runs off just 49 balls), and it was the start of GT’s batting fumble during the run chase, especially in the death overs of the second innings.
After Sudharsan’s dismissal at the team’s total of 170 runs, GT could score only 38 runs in the next 4.2 overs, losing two more wickets and ending up getting restricted to the score of 208 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the entire 20 overs. So, it can be counted a one of the biggest reasons for GT’s defeat against MI.
