India entered the T20 World Cup 2026 as defending champions after having won the previous edition in 2024. They have been slotted in Group A against the likes of Pakistan, Netherlands, USA and Namibia.
Although there are a few changes made to the Men in Blue’s squad as compared to the previous T20 World Cup, they are still a solid lineup filled with star-studded players. As per many experts, India are one of the few teams expected to go all the way and clinch silverware considering the squad as well as the conditions they will be playing under.
Strength
India’s top and middle-order are filled with explosive batters. There have been many occasions in the past where even if a few batters have failed to get going, someone or the other has bailed the team out. Opposition teams will have their work cut out against a power-packed batting order such as that of the co-hosts.
Weakness
In general, the Indian team have pretty much all bases covered. It is quite likely that the trio of Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh and Washington Sundar may get played together. While all of these players are more than capable of striking the big shots and particularly in the subcontinental conditions, they have had minimal experience to global events so far.
Opportunity
In general, the Indian team have pretty much all bases covered. As much talent as Sanju Samson possesses, he has not been able to do adequate justice to it so far. Abhishek Sharma has been in scorching form. However, the high-risk approach has equal chances of faltering as well. This, in turn, may apply additional pressure on Tilak Varma and the batters to follow.
Threat
Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah were the 2024 edition’s second- and third-leading wicket-takers, respectively. While their prowess cannot be doubted, the third pacer in Harshit Rana, however gifted, is yet to establish himself as a proven pacer who could lead the pack. An injury to Arshdeep or Bumrah might take its toll on Harshit, especially since he has a tendency to leak runs.
India’s squad
Suryakumar Yadav (c), Axar Patel (vc), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy
