IND vs SA 2025: 3 Indian players to watch out for in Test series

India are all set to host current World Test Championship (WTC) winners South Africa for a two-Test series starting November 14 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The second Test will be held at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, beginning November 22, the city’s first-ever Test match.

The series holds immense importance, considering the 2025–27 WTC cycle, with both teams currently in the top half of the points table. India, placed third with a 61.9% points percentage, will be keen to strengthen their position before their next big assignment. On the other hand, South Africa, sitting fourth with 50%, arrive on the back of a draw in Pakistan and will look to bag crucial points through this series.

The pitch at Eden Gardens is expected to assist fast bowlers early on with bounce and lateral movement before slowing down to help spinners and reverse swing. With both teams consisting of quality pace attacks, the first Test is expected to be a balanced contest.

Rishabh Pant

Star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is all set to make his much-awaited return to Test cricket. The cricketer missed three months of international cricket due to a foot injury suffered during the England tour, but put on a strong performance for India A against South Africa A. His 90-run knock in Bengaluru and a 65 in the second game drew immense praise.

Pant’s counter-attacking ability can change the course of a match in a single session, something India might rely on heavily, especially in tough batting conditions. Back as the vice-captain for the series, Pant’s presence in the think tank would be important.

Dhruv Jurel

Dhruv Jurel’s recent form with the bat has made him one of India’s most promising red-ball players. The young wicketkeeper-batter has been in sublime touch for India A, scoring twin centuries (132 and 127) in the recent series against South Africa A. His performances have put him in contention for a specialist batter’s role even with Pant’s return. Since his debut, he has scored big runs under pressure, including a maiden Test century against the West Indies. With India still figuring out their middle order post the departures of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, Jurel could be a right fit for the role.

Akash Deep

With conditions in Kolkata expected to assist seamers early on, Akash Deep’s inclusion could heavily help the home team. The Bengal pacer has impressed with his ability to extract bounce and reverse swing on black-soil pitches, the very kind that will be present at Eden Gardens. His performances in domestic cricket have shown his knack for troubling top-order batters with movement both ways. The pacer could fit in the team, considering his knowledge of the Kolkata stadium.
