Highest Test totals at Old Trafford

Manchester’s Old Trafford has long been a bastion of dramatic cricket matches and unforgettable moments. In spite of its reputation as a bowler-friendly ground, it has seen some enormous team totals over the years. It is known for its swing-friendly conditions and unpredictable weather. The teams have amassed heaps of runs at this iconic venue.

Here are the highest test totals at Old Trafford:

3. 611—England vs Australia, 1964

The third-highest total at the Old Trafford ground in Manchester was scored by England in the first innings of the fourth Test match at Manchester in July 1964. England were 611 all out as their effort was powered by centuries from skipper Ted Dexter (174) and Ken Barrington (256), who formed a huge 246-run partnership for the third wicket.

Jim Parks (60) and Geoffrey Boycott (58) also made significant contributions as England reached one of their highest totals at the venue. The game ended in a draw despite the impressive total.

2. 627/7d—England vs Australia, 1934

The second highest total in Tests in Manchester is England’s 627/7d in the 1934 Ashes Test against Australia. The groundwork was laid by Patsy Hendren’s 132 and Maurice Leyland’s 153. They persevered in pushing above 550, and even the tail helped out, with Hedley Verity staying undefeated at 60 and Gubby Allen making 61.

Despite England’s enormous total, Australia replied solidly as the match finished in a tie. Before the pitch deteriorated, England’s tremendous effort showed off the strength of their middle and lower order.

1. 656/8d—Australia vs England, 1964

The highest Test score at Old Trafford came in the same 1964 match, where England posted 611 runs. Australia had batted first and had posted a huge 656/8d in the first innings. This enormous total was laid by Bob Simpson’s triple-century (311 off 743 balls) while Bill Lawry’s (106) and Brian Booth’s (98) supporting performances completed the tourists’ outstanding performance.

Australia took control of the Test by batting calmly through 255.5 overs. While Simpson’s outstanding performance cemented this score into the venue’s record books, England’s bowlers labored in vain.
