Flashback: South Africa’s last Test in India

Flashback: South Africa's last Test in India

The last time India and South Africa played a Test against each other in India dates back to October 2019. The match was played as part of the 2019-21 cycle of the World Test Championship. India had already secured an unassailable lead in the three-match bilateral series by winning the first two matches.

They won the contest played at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi by an innings and 202 runs. Rohit Sharma was awarded the Player of the Match award for his highest Test score (212 off 255), a record which stood intact till the time he retired from the format.

Opting to bat first, India declared their innings on 497/9 in 116.3 overs. A ton from Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 115, and stitched along a 267-run stand for the fourth wicket with Rohit laid the foundation of India’s massive total. George Linde, on international debut, impressed with 4/133 in 31 overs.

The Proteas were shot out for 162 in their first innings. No other player other than Zubayr Hamza (62 off 79), Temba Bavuma (32 off 72) and George Linde (37 off 81) could get to double figures. Every other bowler apart from Ravichandran Ashwin (0/48 in 12 overs) chipped in with at least a wicket.

Virat Kohli had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on on the tourists. South Africa were bundled out for another sub-200 score as they survived only 48 overs as compared to 56.2 in their first innings. The match finished in the first session of the fourth day itself.
