In reply, India needed a good start from their openers and it was important for Rohit Sharma to strike form. The former India captain did exactly that. Alongside captain Shubman Gill, Rohit added 147 runs in an opening partnership that set the platform for the visiting side.

Adil Rashid got the better of Shubman for 77, bringing Virat Kohli to the crease. Kohli and Rohit turned back the clock as they kept the pressure on the England bowlers. In 86 balls, the veteran duo added 113 runs. Rohit seemed to be struggling with a hamstring issue and he tried to score the bulk of his runs through boundaries after getting to his century. Bethell broke the dangerous partnership in the 44th over as he dismissed the Mumbai batter for a 110-ball 138.

At the end of the 43rd over, India were still in the run-chase, having reached 300/2. However, Sam Curran bagged the wickets of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer in the 44th over, putting England into a position of strength.

In his next over, Curran dismissed Kohli for a 60-ball 74 and India were well and truly staring down the barrel. Gurnoor Brar and Arshdeep Singh threw their bats around in the end as India finished on 360/7 to lose the match and the series.
