3 Reasons Why Leicestershire Choked Against Yorkshire in Vitality Blast 2025

3 Reasons Why Leicestershire Choked Against Yorkshire in Vitality Blast 2025

Leicestershire traveled to Leeds in the hope of remaining in the top three in the North Group, however, they were ambushed by a Yorkshire side that had taken their T20 playbook out and then completely rewritten it. Leicestershire showed glimmers of resistance early on, but they were completely bowled over, crashing to a 106-run defeat. From Malan’s carnage to Chohan’s clean-up act, Yorkshire played like they had something to prove, and Leicestershire were left looking for answers.

A Middle-Order Meltdown That Became a Freefall

Needing 214 to win, Leicestershire required partnerships, tempo, and belief. Instead, they served up a procession. Rishi Patel and Sol Budinger offered the only flicker of hope, and as soon as their short association was broken, the panic set in. Captain Louis Kimber went for 4, Shan Masood offered a six-ball 6, and just like that, the middle order folded like a cheap sun chair.

Leicestershire went from 34/2 to 61/7—losing 5 wickets for just 27 runs, in a period of five overs—rendering any chance of even a dignified chase to dust. The scoreboard panic morphed into frozen brain shot selection and total batting collapse. Only Logan van Beek (26 off 19) showed any resistance, but with wickets falling at the other end, he was just a lonely howl in a storm.

Dawid Malan’s Firestorm and Luxton’s Explosive Backup

If Leicestershire’s innings was akin to a car crash, Yorkshire’s was a turbo-charged highway chase – led, unmistakably, by Dawid Malan who scorched his way to 88 off just 48 balls, pummelling 8 fours and 5 sixes, and sharing an eye-watering 132-run partnership with William Luxton, who himself clubbed 62 off 34 balls. Malan’s timing was silk, his shot selection sublime, and their intent pure brutality.

By the time Malan eventually departed at 177/3 in the 17th over, Yorkshire had sucked the life out of the match. Luxton was able to ensure that the momentum never dipped. Leicestershire’s bowlers didn’t have a clue where to bowl – van Beek’s 3/47 was the only silver lining, but they essentially rocked up as cannon fodder in Yorkshire’s demolition job.

Leicestershire’s Tactical Stagnation and Lack of Adaptability

If Yorkshire offered invention, Leicestershire delivered inertia. Kimber’s decision to persist with five frontline bowlers in the face of defeat left him no options. And then we had Malan’s over-excited field placements – at times so spread, at times so negative, that he allowed easy rotation and never created any pressure. Yorkshire used all of their bowlers – seven different bowlers to be precise – while Leicestershire appeared dazed by the storm.

They either failed to assess the pitch, or didn’t think to read the game mid-innings, or did not have the tactical ability to rotate their resources, and suffered badly from a lack of Plan B. And their batting suffered massively too; too much reliance on the top four, and once they capitulate, did it amount to pretender status for the tail?

Long before the 17th over of Leicestershire’s innings, it was clear Yorkshire were in complete control. Yorkshire did not just beat them – they were outschooled and out-gamed. From Malan’s carnage to Chohan’s 4/27 haul, it was a Yorkshire masterclass. More brutally for Leicestershire, it was a confirmation that momentum is everything in T20, and they lost it with bat and ball. If they want to remain alive in the playoff fight, they will need more than just regrouping – they need a reset.
