3 reasons why Arshdeep Singh was picked up for India’s Test squad

3 reasons why Arshdeep Singh was picked up for India's Test squad

Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh has received his first call-up to the Test side for the upcoming English tour. Arshdeep Singh in-fact just needs one wicket to reach the landmark of century of wickets in T20I cricket.

Mohammed Shami had a below-par IPL 2025 season and as per Ajit Agarkar, was ruled out of the series in accordance with the advice given by the BCCI medical team. Jasprit Bumrah as per reports will not play one or two games during the coming English tour due to workload issues.

Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur will be the only two players with enough experience of playing in the tough English conditions. Arshdeep Singh’s inclusion has shown that the selectors are finally ready to give the young seamer his chance to shine in the red-ball format as well.

Here are the top three reasons why Arshdeep Singh was picked for England tour

3. Natural exponent of swing

One of the biggest strengths for Arshdeep Singh has been his ability to swing the ball with decent pace. In the white-ball format many have seen his natural in-swing and away going deliveries trouble the batters. In the last tour of South Africa, the left-arm seamer made the ball talk under lights to put the home team batters under pressure. England with its cloud cover will provide Arshdeep the chance to bowl to some of the most aggressive batters and hopefully keep the slip cordon busy.

2. Bowler for the future

When Jasprit Bumrah played in his first tour of England he was 24 years old. Bumrah had the experience of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, and Umesh Yadav guide him. With India set for a transition period, Arshdeep will be a key bowler in the future across all formats. This tour could give Arshdeep the much needed lessons to succeed and survive in the Test format.

1. Prior experience of English conditions

In the current Indian squad three players have enough experience of playing county cricket. Sai Sudharsan played for Surrey while Karun Nair played for Northamptonshire, Arshdeep Singh too played a few games for Kent where he was able to pick 13 wickets. The left-arm seamer had a decent outing with the ball and managed to make a name for himself. This could one of the prime reasons behind Arshdeep’s inclusion for the England tour.
