3 players who can replace Virat Kohli at number four in Tests

India’s Test team is in the hunt for a new number four after the retirement of Virat Kohli from the red ball format. Kohli had batted in the number four spot for the last 11 and a half years post the retirement of batting great Sachin Tendulkar. It is a key position in Test cricket because some of the best batters tend to be placed at that spot.

For the first time in nearly 12 years, the Indian cricket team will have to find a new number four. Rajat Patidar had batted in that spot when Kohli wasn’t part of the England Test series in early 2024. While Patidar isn’t going to be picked for England, there are a few other options who could throw their hands up for the spot.

Here are likely replacements of Virat Kohli at number three:

3. Devdutt Padikkal

The left-handed batter from Karnataka, Devdutt Padikkal, could be a likely replacement for Kohli at the number four slot in Test cricket. Padikkal recently displayed some magnificent knocks in the IPL 2025 and looked in great touch. The left-handed batter also has the ability to bat for long periods and put the bowlers under pressure. Coming tour of England could be a huge chance for Padikkal to prove his Test credentials.

2. Sai Sudharsan

If KL Rahul is asked to open the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill continues to bat at number three, then Sai Sudharsan can be a good replacement for Virat Kohli. The young batter is in great form with the bat not just in the IPL but also in domestic cricket. Sudharsan is a natural timer of the ball and has the talent to score huge runs in the longest format.

1. KL Rahul

KL Rahul

One of the best options to bat at number four for India is veteran star KL Rahul who has been with the Indian team for over a decade now. Based on his experience and overall Test numbers, KL Rahul can do the job for India at the number four spot and replace Virat Kohli. His experience of playing in England will also come in handy as this is Rahul’s third tour.
