1958: Arthur Milton scored 104 not out in the match against New Zealand at Headingley

1958 Arthur Milton scored 104 not out in the match against New Zealand at Headingley

Arthur Milton was one of the few breeds of sportsperson who actually excelled in two sports. Arthur Milton was known to be an excellent cricketer as well as more than decent with the ball at his feet. It wasn’t without this skill and talent did he played for Arsenal FC in the old Division 1 era.

Arthur Milton played 6 Test matches for England and scored 204 runs with an average of 25.5. His international career began with a debut Test ton before he faltered and ended his career against India just under a year later.

He has also played for England in football where he got to play against Austria. In his 84 matches for the Gunners, Arthur Milton scored once in every four games to end with 21 goals from a total of 84 matches.

Arthur Milton scores his only Test ton

Facing off against the visiting New Zealand side, in Leeds, the home team broke little sweat in winning the match. New Zealand batted first and were bowled out for a mere 67 runs with openers Lawrie Miller (26) and Tony D’ Arcy with 11 the only batters to get into double digits. Jim Laker picked 5/17 while Tony Lock ended with 4/14 from a combined 40.1 overs.

England lost Mike Smith for 3 and soon lost Tom Graveney for 31. That was the last joy the visiting side got as they saw England score 267/2 and take an overall lead of 200 runs. Arthur Milton batted for 295 balls and scored 104 runs with 11 hits to the fence. Skipper Peter May was more aggressive and enterprising as he was not out on 113 from 174 balls with 17 fours and 2 sixes.

Tony MacGobbin was out for 39 as he was the best batter for New Zealand in the second innings. The Kiwis were bowled out for 129 to lose the match by an innings and 71 runs as Tony Lock picked 7/51 to take his match aggregate to 11/65. That was the only high moment for Arthur Morris sadly as he soon fell out of favour after failing to score in the next 5 matches.
