SF Unicorns return to the diamond for their 22nd match in MLC 2025, under the unfortunate circumstance of a 12-run loss to the Washington Freedom. With playoffs around the corner, every game counts, and this time against a very dangerous Seattle Orcas. A focused, consistently balanced playing XI will be critical for SF to stay in the title hunt.
Openers

Matthew Short continues to lead the charge of the Unicorns’ top order. The Unicorns’ skipper roared to 67 off 40 balls in the previous match, striking four boundaries and six sixes early on in the run chase. Short’s attacking intent early on in a chase is essential as he is very dangerous against the new ball, and can be aggressive against the spinners, which is completely necessary at the top.
Just ahead of Short, I hope that Finn Allen plays again, even after a quiet outing vs Washington. Allen recorded just 7 runs in the last match but is still an explosive T20 opener and someone who can single-handedly win a match alone. Once Short settles and starts pacing the innings, Allen’s natural attacking instinct can put pressure on the Orcas’ bowlers very early in the innings.
Middle Order

Sanjay Krishnamurthi looked completely at ease, scoring a composed 24 from 21 balls in the last match. He batted through a tense middle period of his team’s innings and not only absorbed that pressure but continued to rotate the strike effectively to give his team some momentum in a difficult period. He has a nice temperament when under pressure, and given that he also plays spin well, he is a valid option for the No. 4 position.
Wicketkeeper-batter Jahmar Hamilton should stay in the middle order as he was instrumental in finishing with 31 not out off only 18 balls in the last match, providing the late charge that nearly got SF over the line with that innings. He showed good awareness of the phase and excellent finishing ability. Plus, his quick glove work makes him a reliable presence behind the wickets.
All-Rounders

Romario Shepherd’s match was one to forget with bat and ball; however, he is still one of SF’s most explosive talents. While certainly getting a duck, Shepherd can still be a high-risk, high-reward player based on his speed variations alone. Couple that with his T20 capabilities and relief with the bat, SF could be trusting his ability to come good on his day.
Hassan Khan, contributing just 7 runs with the bat and with no wickets to his name, is a useful option as a left-arm spin bowler. Khan provides variety in bowling options, and he can also produce useful runs down the order. Since Lauderhill helps slow bowlers, Khan may prove to be even more effective in the next match.
Bowlers

Xavier Bartlett led the bowling attack last time, finishing with impressive figures of 4 for 32 from his 4 overs. His early scalps ripped Washington’s top order apart, and he will again play an important part in what he can provide as the new-ball bowler. Bartlett is a special bowler who can swing the ball and hit hard lengths – SF’s leading pace option.
Romario Shepherd also managed to take a wicket while keeping it relatively tidy through the middle overs. Given the result didn’t quite go SF’s way, keeping Shepherd able to mix his pace with some reliable breakthroughs when the team is under pressure becomes even more valuable. The Unicorns will need him to be firing against a very daunting Seattle batting unit.
With players like Matthew Short and Xavier Bartlett in form as match-winners, the Unicorns have what it takes to bounce back strongly. A few astute changes to the XI could potentially make all the difference as they take on a tough Seattle Orcas team in a must-win match.
