Canada qualify for T20 World Cup 2026 to be played in India, Sri Lanka

Canada became the 13th nation to qualify for the impending ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after a seven-wicket triumph over Bahamas in Ontario in the Americas Regional Final. The victory was Canada’s fifth win in as many games in the four-team event, which cruised them through to the marquee event, which is set to be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka.

The win ensured the Nicholas Kirton-led side a top-of-the-table finish irrespective of the results which go down in the final couple of games, one of which include Canada. This will be the second time Canada will make their presence felt at the biannual 20-over tournament.

Next year’s tournament will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Apart from the Asian giants, the other sides to qualify are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, the USA, and the West Indies. Seven additional nations will join the aforementioned nations (two from Europe, two from Africa, and three from the Asia-EAP).

Canada were the favourites to go through after the USA had already guaranteed their birth by making it to the Super Eights of the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup where they beat teams like the 2009 champions Pakistan. They did exactly what was expected from them, winning all their games by comprehensive margins.

Two of their most-comprehensive wins came against Bermuda (Match 1) and Bahamas (Match 6) by 110 runs and 10 wickets, respectively. Their recent win against the Bahamas was no less emphatic. Electing to field first, they bundled out the opposition on just 57 in 19.5 overs before chasing down the target in a mere 5.3 overs.

Kaleem Sana (3/6 in four overs), Ansh Patel (2/7 in four overs), and Dilpreet Bajwa (36 off 14) were the standout performers for Canada. They have a chance to go unbeaten if they win their final game of the tournament at the Maple Leaf North-West Ground in King City against Bermuda on June 22 (1 AM Indian Standard Time).
