Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar shared his take on why he felt cricket fans and experts alike should not excessively laud 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Gavaskar’s comments came after the teenage sensation was dismissed for a second-ball duck in Rajasthan Royals’ match against Mumbai Indians on Thursday, May 1.

Gavaskar emphasised Suryavanshi’s potential and subtly suggested the need for level-headed appreciation over anything else.

“I mean, look — when he entered the auction, he had already scored a hundred against Australia in a youth Test, and that was against a pretty good attack. For a 13-year-old to score a hundred against an international team, albeit not their top side, still shows the lad had talent. And he has just gone on and on from there. I do believe that he is someone we shouldn’t praise to the skies,” shared Gavaskar while speaking to JioHotstar.

Shouldn’t become something he feels he must live up to every time: Gavaskar

The renowned commentator felt that the budding cricketer should prioritise working on his natural game and not get overawed by a huge amount of expectations from him.

“In this case, we just get the feeling, even in his very first game, with the first ball he faced, he hit it for six. Now, that shouldn’t become something he feels he must live up to every time. Experienced bowlers will think, ‘Ah, he wants to hit the first ball for six?’ They will bowl it short, and then he might get out. Then, he could start to worry and overthink things,” added Gavaskar.

In just his third innings for RR, Suryavanshi smashed his way to a sublime hundred (101 off 38) against Gujarat Titans. However, things did not work out the way they did on Thursday. Suryavanshi was dismissed on the second delivery he faced. The youngster was caught at mid-on while trying to go for the big shot over the fielder at the edge of the circle.
