The match 36 of the IPL 2025 between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) is currently underway at the Wankhede Stadium. SRH posted a competitive total of 162 runs on a flat pitch.

MI got off to a steady start, scoring 66 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. In the 7th over, bowled by Zeeshan Ansari, Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks were at the crease. On the fifth ball of the over, Zeeshan delivered to Rickelton, who slapped a shot straight to cover. SRH skipper Pat Cummins, stationed at cover, moved swiftly to his right and took a clean catch.

SRH began to celebrate what looked like a crucial breakthrough, but the fourth umpire intervened, bringing in an unexpected drama. The on-field umpire stopped Rickelton and called for a review, eventually ruling the delivery a no-ball. After checking the delivery, it was found that SRH wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen had his gloves positioned in front of the stumps at the striker’s end at the time the ball made contact with the bat.

MCC Law on wicketkeeper’s position

“The wicketkeeper shall remain wholly behind the wicket at the striker’s end from the moment the ball comes into play until it either touches the bat or person of the striker, or passes the wicket at the striker’s end, or the striker attempts a run,” according to the MCC Laws of Cricket. In case of a violation of the law, the umpire is required to call and signal a no-ball.

As per the law, Klaasen’s movement led to the delivery being deemed illegal, handing Rickelton a lifeline and SRH a missed opportunity.

Both teams came into this match in identical situations, two wins in six games, and are in desperate need of a victory to revive their campaign and climb the points table.
