Shubman Gill scripted history with his unbeaten ton on Day 1 of the second Test of the ongoing five-match Test series between England and India. Gill ended the day on 114* off 216 deliveries, an innings which has comprised 12 fours so far.

With this knock, he became a part of two exclusive lists – hundreds in three consecutive Tests by Indians against England and hundreds in first two Tests as Indian captain. He joined Virat Kohli, Vijay Hazare, and Sunil Gavaskar in the latter list.

Other than that, Gill’s control percentage of 96.5% is the highest for any batter at the time of reaching century in Tests in England (since the availability of records).

For the unversed, Gill’s previous Test against in England prior to the current series was also at Edgbaston – the rescheduled fifth and final game of the 2021 series which was played in 2022 after a Covid outbreak in the camp forced a midway halt.

Gill’s first ton of this series was the 147-run knock against the Ben Stokes-led unit at Headingley. Meanwhile, both Gill and India will be keen on capitalising on the brilliant foundation laid on Day 1.

Speaking of the opening day, the Indians dominated as apart from Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 off 107), who had played excellently in the first-half of the day, was dismissed just 13 short of what would have been his second ton in this series too.

Resuming proceedings on the second day alongside Gill will be Ravindra Jadeja. The spin-bowling all-rounder is unbeaten on 41 off 67 balls. As for England, Chris Woakes was the standout performer for them. The 36-year-old’s figures read 2/59 in 21 overs at stumps.
