OTD Adam Gilchrist became the first cricketer to get 100 sixes in Test Cricket during the clash against Sri Lanka in 2007

Former Australian star batter and wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist became the first-ever batter to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. The feat came during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Hobart. Gilchrist scored 67 runs from 77 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. The left-handed batter ended his career with exactly 100 sixes in 96 Test matches with 5570 runs with an average of 47 along with 17 centuries and 26 fifties.

Out of the 100 sixes hit by Adam Gilchrist 21 of them came against New Zealand. Against England, the former Aussie star had hit 16 sixes while hitting 12 against South Africa and 10 each against Sri Lanka and India. Adam Gilchrist smashed Pakistani and West Indian bowlers for 8 sixes each with 6 and 5 against Bangladesh Zimbabwe. 4 more sixes came during the ICC Super Test against World XI.

Adam Gilchrist’s most sixes in an innings came during his epic 204 against South Africa where he hit 8 maximums. The feat came in 2007 and Gilchrist had left behind the likes of Brian Lara, Chris Cairns, and Sir Viv Richards. Currently, Ben Stokes leads the list with 131 sixes while former Kiwi skipper and current England coach Brendon McCullum is second with 107 hits.

Among the active players, Rohit Sharma is 8th in the list with 88 sixes while Kiwi pacer Tim Southee is 6th with 93 sixes. Southee has already said that he is set to bid goodbye to Test cricket and will want to become the 4th player in the history of Test cricket to hit 100 Test sixes.

Australia claim an easy win over Sri Lanka.

Australia managed to beat Sri Lanka by 96 runs to win the series 2-0. Ricky Ponting’s side batted first and scored 542/5 with centuries by Phil Jacques (150) and Michael Hussey scoring 132. Andrew Symonds scored 50 while Michael Clarke scored 71 with Gilchrist’s 67 aiding Australia to post the huge total.

Sri Lanka in reply were bowled out for 246 to trail by 296 runs as skipper Mahela Jayawardene scored 104 and Kumar Sangakkara hit 57 runs. Brett Lee was the best bowler for the hosts with 4/82 from his 23.2 overs.

Australia didn’t enforce the follow-on as they batted for a second time and hit 210/2 from 46 overs. Phil Jacques and Ricky Ponting scored fifties to set Lanka a target of 507 runs to win. After the early fall of Michael Vandort, it was Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara who steadied the ship with a 143-run stand.

Atapattu hit 80 runs from 164 balls in what turned out to be his final game of cricket. Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya then added 107 runs for the 4th wicket before the latter was out for 45. Sangakkara kept going as he waged a lone battle and then found an able ally in Lasith Malinga to add 74 runs for the 9th wicket. Sangakkara was out for 192 off 282 balls with 27 fours and a six. Malinga and Muralitharan gave the Australian bowlers a huge scare with 46 46-run stand for the 10th wicket. The win came when Muralitharan was out for 15 off 12 with Malinga not out on 42 off 58 balls.
