The third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane ended in a rain-affected draw, resulting in a drop in both teams’ points percentage (PCT) in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. Despite the challenging situations, the visitors managed to avoid defeat after being on the back foot for most of the match.
India entered the third Test aiming to consolidate their position in the WTC standings, while the hosts looked to gain a lead in the series. The match, however, was impacted by rain, which disrupted play over multiple sessions. Australia declared their second innings at 89/7 on the final day, giving India a target of 275 runs with limited time remaining. Ultimately, poor light and persistent rain allowed the officials to decide to finish in a draw.
The match witnessed some brilliant individual performances from both sides. Australia’s Travis Head was the standout performer, scoring a crucial 152 in the first innings and chipping in with a wicket later. India, on the other hand, relied on KL Rahul’s 84 and Ravindra Jadeja’s 77 to guide them away from a tricky position early on. The last-wicket partnership between Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep added 39 runs, helping India avoid the follow-on and keeping them in contention.
In Australia’s second innings, Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj bowled exceptionally, picking up early wickets to restrict the hosts to a low score. However, the rain’s intervention and bad light meant that India only faced 2.1 overs in their second innings before the match was called off.

From a WTC perspective, the draw resulted in India’s PCT dropping from 57.29% to 55.88%, while Australia’s PCT fell from 60.71% to 58.89%. South Africa’s win over Sri Lanka further complicated the standings, pushing them to the top with a 63.33% PCT.

Jasprit Bumrah is a national treasure. He needs the rest of his team to front up with bat and ball. Marnus Labuscagne needs a score soon.
