Day 3 of the World Test Championship final (WTC) 2023 saw Australia strike early as KS Bharat was dismissed on the second ball of the day. However, Shardul Thakur and Ajinkya Rahane stabilised the innings for team India. Rahane amassed 89 runs in 129 deliveries, whereas Thakur scored 51 runs in 109 deliveries.

Both batters’ valiant knocks helped India post 296 runs on the board. Australia skipper Pat Cummins was the highest wicket taker for Australia in the first innings. The 30-year-old took three wickets, dismissing Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Umesh Yadav. Furthermore, Scott Boland, Mitchell Starc, and Cameron Green took two wickets each with Nathan Lyon striking once.

Following their subpar showing with the bat on Day 2, India showed resilience and fought back. Through brilliant knocks by Rahane and Thakur, the side managed to notch up a respectable total on the board. Coming in to bat in the second innings, Australia got off to a horrid start as veteran batter David Warner was sent packing by Mohammed Siraj quite early on.

The 36-year-old looked to be in the flow in the first innings, however, things were quite different on Day 3 as he was dismissed for just one run. Furthermore, Usman Khawaja fell prey to Umesh Yadav later. Khawaja, who was dismissed for a duck in the first innings, only managed to score 13 runs on Day 3 in the second innings. Steven Smith, who was fabulous in the first innings, was unable to make an impact as well.

The 34-year-old was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja for 34 runs in 47 deliveries, with Travis Head falling prey to the all-rounder as well. Travis amassed 18 runs in 27 balls, before he hit the ball straight into Jadeja’s hands. By the end of Day 3, Cameron Green and Marnus Labuschagne stood at the crease. While Green will continue at 7*(27), Labuschagne will look for a hal-century as he currently stands at 41*(118).
