Russell Domingo has parted ways with Hampshire after a single season as head coach, the county club has confirmed on Friday, November 06. The 52-year-old had taken charge in December 2025 on a two-year contract, stepping into the position vacated by Adi Birrell.

The defining blow of his tenure arrived in mid-September 2026, when Hampshire’s relegation from Division One of the County Championship was confirmed. The drop ended a 12-year stay in the top flight and sent the club into Division Two. The previous season had offered a warning: Hampshire had come close to the same fate in 2025, only surviving because Durham were reprieved after a final-day collapse against Yorkshire.

Across limited-overs formats, results were uneven. For the fifth time in six seasons, Hampshire qualified for Blast Finals Day, yet they could not advance past the group stage of the One-Day Cup. Alongside his Hampshire duties, Domingo had been managing responsibilities with the Lions, the Johannesburg-based franchise competing in South Africa‘s revamped domestic structure. That Lions commitment extends through to the end of April. Hampshire confirmed they will begin the search for a new men’s head coach in the new year.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Hampshire Cricket for the opportunity to be part of the club over the past season. Hampshire is a special club with a proud history, passionate supporters and a talented group of players and staff,” Domingo said in a club statement.

Why did Domingo leave Hampshire after just one season?

Relegation from Division One of the County Championship was the central factor behind Domingo’s exit. Losing top-flight status after 12 consecutive seasons there represented a significant setback for the club, and it came despite Hampshire having narrowly avoided the same outcome in 2025 through circumstances beyond their control, specifically Durham’s reprieve following a collapse against Yorkshire on the final day of that season.

The dual-role arrangement also contributed to the pressures of his tenure. Balancing Hampshire’s schedule with his Lions assignment in South Africa placed considerable demands on Domingo throughout the year, and the club’s failure to progress beyond the group stage of the One-Day Cup added to the scrutiny on the coaching setup.

Who will replace Domingo as Hampshire’s head coach?

Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, outlined the club’s priorities after Domingo’s departure was confirmed.

“We are focused on appointing a new men’s head coach and ensuring we are in the strongest possible position to challenge for promotion back to Division One, while continuing our success in limited-overs cricket,” White said.

Hampshire have not named any candidates publicly, and no timeline beyond a broad new-year window has been disclosed. Domingo, for his part, continues in his role with the Lions in South Africa, a commitment that runs until the end of April.
