Chennai Super Kings face critical retention decisions as the IPL 2027 deadline of November 17, 2026 approaches. The franchise has endured two difficult seasons, finishing rock-bottom in 2025 and eighth in 2026, prompting fresh strategic thinking under newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan.
Chopra advocates retaining five core players while recommending the release of two others who have underperformed or failed to justify their investment.
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad remains central to Chopra’s retention strategy despite CSK’s playoff failures during his three seasons in charge. Chopra stated that Gaikwad’s dual role as captain and opener makes his retention non-negotiable regardless of financial outlay.
“Ruturaj Gaikwad, be it Rs 18 crore or Rs 25 crore, he’s the captain and the opener after all. Definitely retain. Someone told me CSK would let him go, and I said,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Gaikwad maintained a strike rate of 123.44 across IPL 2026 as the franchise’s opening batter. The right-handed batter will look to bounce back strongly in the coming season.
Who else does Chopra want CSK to retain?
Beyond the captain, Chopra recommends retaining New Zealand batter Dewald Brevis, West Indies all-rounder Akeal Hosein, England seamer Jamie Overton and New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry. These five players form the core of Chopra’s proposed retention strategy heading into the mini-auction.
Why release Prashant Veer?
Chopra’s recommendation to release Prashant Veer marks a significant shift in CSK’s approach to the uncapped player category. Veer was purchased for ₹14.20 crore at the IPL 2024 auction, making him one of the most expensive uncapped signings in the tournament’s history. However, his IPL 2026 campaign yielded only 90 runs across six matches, struck at 134.32, while he bowled just two overs in the season. The poor return on investment has prompted Chopra to suggest the franchise move on from the player.
Chopra also recommends releasing Australian batter Matt Short, completing his two-player exit strategy. The mini-auction for IPL 2027 is scheduled for December 17 in Goa, where CSK will have the opportunity to rebuild their squad following the retention window.
