Former Australia wicketkeeper Ian Healy has called for chief selector George Bailey to be removed from his role following Australia’s 2-1 Test series defeat in South Africa in September and October 2026. Healy made his remarks targeting both the selection panel and the future of head coach Andrew McDonald.

South Africa won the three-match series after taking the second Test in Gqeberha by an innings and 31 runs and the third Test in Cape Town by 176 runs. Australia had won the opening Test in Durban, where they posted 214 runs, but could not sustain that form. In the third Test, played October 27-31, Australia were bowled out for 111 in their second innings as South Africa sealed the series.

“Yes, I think so. I think it’s time to move on. But he’s also got a selection panel he’s got to get these selections over (the line) with. That’s the coach and Tony Dodemaide, a second selector; they are together. It’s a bit mind-boggling at times how you can get a selection over the line with three of you agreeing to do it,” Healy said on SENQ Breakfast.

Why did Healy single out the selection panel?

Healy’s criticism extended well beyond Bailey alone. He questioned the overall balance of the squad that toured South Africa, pointing specifically to the inclusion of Nic Maddinson as a selection he found difficult to justify. The panel’s decisions, in Healy’s view, left Australia underprepared for the conditions they faced.

“The coach stays out of those areas (like what to do at the toss), but Andrew McDonald is a selector. I think the selectors, with their laughable squad that was unbalanced in South Africa, really need looking at. I can’t believe they got the Nic Maddinson selection over the line. What I’m hearing is they are looking at extending the coach … but what I’d be doing is inquiring about the availability of several. Can we get Ricky Ponting,” Healy said.

“He (McDonald) is in the gun. I don’t mind one more year, McDonald taking us through to the Ashes. If things don’t improve, then I would have worked on a high-profile player to carry our next generation forward as head coach,” he added.

Healy’s mention of Ricky Ponting as a potential head coach candidate was notable. McDonald was appointed Test coach in 2022, and Healy indicated he would accept one more year from McDonald, provided results improve ahead of the Ashes against England scheduled for 2027. The prospect of a series in India also looms as a major overseas assignment for Australia in the near future.

What is the scrutiny on Pat Cummins?

Pat Cummins’ captaincy decisions during the series also drew scrutiny, with his calls in the first and third Tests questioned after they did not produce the desired results for Australia. The captain’s role in match-day decisions, including at the toss, became a point of discussion alongside the selection debate.

“The captain in cricket runs the show and takes the rap,” Healy said.

That framing placed Cummins at the centre of accountability for the series outcome, even as Healy’s broader argument pointed to structural issues within the selection panel rather than the captain alone. With the Ashes against England in 2027 and a Test series in India on the horizon, Australia face a significant period of overseas cricket. The 2-1 defeat in South Africa has intensified calls for a review of both the selection process and the coaching setup before those assignments begin.
