Sydney Thunder have signed allrounder Will Salzmann on a one-year deal for BBL|16. The announcement, made on October 22, 2026, brings the 22-year-old back into the Thunder setup after he was previously listed in the BBL|13 squad.
Salzmann was born on November 19, 2003, and grew up in Camden. He is a right-handed batter and right-arm fast-medium bowler who made his first-class debut on October 4, 2025, against Western Australia. He has since built a consistent record for New South Wales across formats.
The signing follows a standout domestic performance. Last month, Salzmann earned the player-of-the-match award in NSW’s One-Day Cup opener against Queensland. He scored 70 off 65 balls to help the Blues chase down a target of 359 and seal a four-wicket victory, underlining his value as a match-winning batter in the middle order.
Why has Salzmann returned to the Thunder squad?
Salzmann’s return is built on the form he has shown for New South Wales in the lead-up to BBL|16. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball has placed him firmly in contention for a Big Bash debut, and the Thunder moved to secure him ahead of the season. Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland explained the club’s thinking behind the signing.
“Will was a player both Freddie and I were really keen to secure, and we’re delighted to have him on board. When we decided to sign Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson instead of an overseas allrounder, that decision was intertwined with the strength of domestic allrounder talent. It’s the area Fred was most passionately wanting to take players under his wing,” said Copeland.
“His recent performances are a reflection of the hard work and dedication he’s put in over the past 12 months. He’s been right in the mix of a Big Bash debut for some time now, and we believe he’s never been better placed to take that next step. He’s an exciting allrounder who brings plenty of firepower with the bat and genuine pace with the ball. He adds another dimension to an already dynamic squad, and we’re excited to see what he can produce in Thunder green this summer,” he added.
What does Salzmann’s signing mean for his ties to the Thunder?
Salzmann’s connection to the Thunder runs deeper than his playing history with the club. Camden sits within the Macarthur region, which has a strong grassroots link to Sydney Thunder. The Tahmoor Turtles Cricket Club, based in the same region, has approximately 50 junior players and organises an annual bus trip to support the Thunder at a Big Bash fixture, reflecting the community bond between the club and the area Salzmann calls home. Salzmann spoke about returning to the Thunder environment ahead of BBL|16.
“It’s just such a great feeling to be back. It’s a great energy around. It was really encouraging speaking with Freddie [Flintoff, Thunder’s new Head Coach]. I think I sort of spoke to him as I’m a young allrounder that’s keen to learn about the game and all three formats, and he was one of the best to do it, so it’s a big part and it’s just super exciting to sort of have that relationship now,” said Salzmann.
“I want to be sort of a player that can make a play and a player that can change the game, so it’s been encouraging to get off to a nice start with New South Wales here at the Blues, but I’m just really keen to see what I can bring to Thunder. Last few years have been tough and frustrating watching from the sideline and having to go through injuries, I’ve felt like I’m so close but yet so far. I think it’s sort of bittersweet going through that. I just look at the next sort of few months and this tournament coming up and I think the timing’s right, I’m hungry for it now,” he added.
The Thunder are coached by Freddie Flintoff for BBL|16, with Copeland serving as General Manager. Salzmann will look to make his Big Bash debut under Flintoff’s charge after building his credentials through the domestic circuit with New South Wales.
