Raphy Weatherall has committed his future to Northamptonshire by signing a new two-year contract extension. The 21-year-old fast bowler will now remain at cinch County Ground through the end of the 2028 season, extending his stay at the club beyond his previous three-year agreement that was due to expire at the end of summer 2027.

Weatherall made his first-team debut as a teenager on April 12, 2024, against Middlesex and has since featured in 29 matches across all formats for Northants, claiming 41 wickets. His development has been interrupted by significant injury, as a stress fracture in his back forced him to miss almost the entirety of the 2025 season. However, he remained injury-free throughout 2026 and also achieved a major personal milestone by graduating with his law degree at Exeter University in June.

Weatherall has spoken about the significance of this year in his career and personal life. After working meticulously on his fitness and strength following his back injury, he has now secured his long-term future at the club with this new deal.

“This year has been a material year for me in that I graduated from my law degree at Exeter University in June,” Weatherall was quoted as saying by Northamptonshire Telegraph.

What did Weatherall say about his recovery and future?

Weatherall’s best performance in the County Championship came early in the 2025 season when he took 6 for 70 against Kent. In both the T20 Blast and One Day Cup, his finest figures stand at 4 for 50. These performances across different formats demonstrate the range of his bowling ability and his potential as a multi-format cricketer.

What is Lehmann’s assessment of Weatherall’s potential?

Head Coach Darren Lehmann expressed confidence in Weatherall’s future at the club. Lehmann recognised the challenges the young pacer has faced but remained optimistic about his trajectory and the opportunities that lie ahead.

“Raphy is a very exciting young talent who has a very high ceiling. He’s obviously had some pretty big injuries which we’ll continue to manage, but we’re all looking forward for what’s to come from him,” the former Australian cricketer said.
