Grant Flower has informed Sussex that he will depart the club at the end of October 2026 to join Surrey’s coaching staff. The 55-year-old, who arrived at Sussex in January 2022, will begin work at The Oval in November alongside head coach Gareth Batty. Flower’s departure marks another significant exit from Sussex during a period of considerable change at the club.
Flower brings substantial international coaching experience to his new role. He served with Pakistan’s coaching staff from 2014 to 2019 and played an instrumental role in Pakistan’s 2017 ICC Champions Trophy victory. He subsequently spent two years coaching in Sri Lanka before joining Sussex in 2022.
“I’m really excited about joining Surrey and taking on this new challenge,” Flower was quoted as saying by Cricinfo.
Why Flower is leaving Sussex
During his time at Sussex, Flower worked with a squad that secured promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2024 and finished third in the 2026 season. However, the club has faced considerable financial difficulties in recent times, having been placed in special measures by the ECB in February 2026 following a reported operating loss. Flower cited the club’s financial challenges as the reason for his departure, acknowledging the difficult circumstances that prompted his decision to seek a new opportunity.
“Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Given the financial challenges currently facing the club, I have made the difficult decision to move on. While it is sad to say goodbye, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity I have been offered at Surrey and look forward to embracing this exciting new chapter in my coaching career,” Flower noted.
What lies ahead at The Oval
Flower’s move to The Oval comes as Surrey seeks to strengthen its coaching structure following the departure of Jim Troughton from his assistant coach role to Warwickshire. Flower will work directly with Batty to prepare the squad for the 2027 season.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the players and staff in November, building strong relationships and getting straight to work as we prepare for the 2027 season. It’s an exciting new chapter, and I can’t wait to get started,” he concluded.
