Hasan Mahmud made history on Sunday, October 11, 2026, when he became the first fast bowler from Bangladesh to complete a Test hat-trick. The achievement came during the one-off Test against Afghanistan at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Mahmud finished the first innings with figures of 5 for 55, a performance that included the three consecutive dismissals that secured his place in Bangladesh cricket history.
The hat-trick came through three different modes of dismissal. Ismat Alam was bowled with his off stump uprooted, Qais Ahmad edged a delivery to wicketkeeper Litton Das, who took a low catch to his right, and Zia-ur-Rehman was given out LBW after Bangladesh successfully reviewed the decision via the Decision Review System.
“It’s an amazing feeling. When you start bowling and see movement off the wicket, you try to bowl upright, swing the ball and get a wicket. I was just trying that and following my process. I was pleased to see this kind of movement in the morning. Last day I only got one wicket the whole day, but I wasn’t nervous at all. I was looking forward to today,” Mahmud said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
How was the hat-trick unfolded?
The hat-trick came through three different modes of dismissal. Ismat Alam was bowled with his off stump uprooted, Qais Ahmad edged a delivery to wicketkeeper Litton Das, who took a low catch to his right, and Zia-ur-Rehman was given out LBW after Bangladesh successfully reviewed the decision via the Decision Review System.
“Great catch by Litton Das to remove Qais. Later, Ziaur’s ball hit him directly on the pad, and it was straight. I talked to Litton, and he said it was going to hit, maybe it was just about the back foot. So, yeah, we took the review,” Mahmud said.
“We lost a couple of DRS in the first innings, so everyone was thinking about the DRS, whether it was going to be hitting or not. Credit to the captain and Litton Das. They were talking and chatting with each other, and then they told me that it was going to hit, so I could take the review,” he added.
Bowling straight and letting the ball work: Mahmud
Mahmud became the third Bangladesh bowler to achieve a Test hat-trick. Alok Kapali accomplished the milestone in 2003 against Pakistan, and Sohag Gazi achieved it in 2013 against New Zealand. However, Mahmud became the first fast bowler from Bangladesh to join this exclusive club. Bangladesh went on to reach 223 for 6 in their second innings, establishing a lead of 329 runs overall after Day 3 of the match.
“I just felt that I should bowl straight. That’s it. Let the ball do the job. So I just followed the line and bowled at the top of the stumps,” Mahmud said.
