3 West Indies bowlers that could threaten India’s batters in 3rd T20I

3 West Indies bowlers that could threaten India's batters in 3rd T20I

West Indies will look to build on their remarkable victory in the second T20I when they face India in the third match of the five-match series at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday, October 11. After India posted a formidable 249/5 in Ranchi, the visitors chased down the target in just 18.3 overs to level the series at 1-1.

While Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford stole the headlines with their explosive batting, West Indies’ bowling attack also has players capable of troubling India’s power-packed lineup. Roston Chase was particularly impressive in Ranchi, while the spin combination of Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein could pose questions for the Indian batters.

Here are three West Indies bowlers who could threaten India in the third T20I.

1. Roston Chase

Roston Chase should be one of the biggest threats to India’s batters after producing an excellent spell in the second T20I. The off-spinner finished with figures of 3/24 in four overs, dismissing Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shivam Dube. His performance stood out in a match in which India scored nearly 250 runs.

Chase relied on accuracy, subtle changes of pace and variations in trajectory rather than attempting to extract extravagant turn. His ability to keep the batters guessing proved effective against India’s aggressive middle order, which struggled to dominate him as it did against the other bowlers.

The conditions in Indore could present a different challenge. Holkar Stadium is known for its batting-friendly surface and relatively short boundaries, meaning Chase will need to be especially disciplined with his line and length. However, his performance in Ranchi will give him confidence that he can still make an impact against India’s powerful hitters.

India’s left-handed batters, including Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, will be keen to attack him if they get a chance to settle. Chase could counter that approach by bowling flatter and quicker, forcing them to manufacture shots rather than allowing them to play freely through the line.

If he can deliver another economical spell and pick up wickets in the middle overs, Chase could be crucial to West Indies’ chances of taking the series lead.

2. Gudakesh Motie

Gudakesh Motie is another bowler India will need to approach carefully. The left-arm spinner was included in West Indies’ playing XI for the second T20I, replacing Matthew Forde. His role in the attack could become particularly important against India’s left-handed batters and their aggressive approach during the middle overs.

Motie’s challenge will be to find the right balance between attacking the stumps and protecting the boundaries. On a ground such as Indore, even a slight error in length can give batters an opportunity to clear the ropes. He will therefore need to vary his pace, change his angle and avoid becoming predictable.

India have several batters who can accelerate rapidly once they settle. Tilak Varma is capable of manipulating the field, while Shivam Dube can target spinners with his power-hitting. Motie will need to prevent them from comfortably rotating the strike before attempting bigger shots.

One way to do that is to bowl into the pitch when appropriate and use changes of pace to disrupt the batters’ timing. He could also benefit from attacking fields early in his spell, particularly if India lose a wicket and a new batter arrives at the crease.

Motie may not need to produce a spectacular spell to influence the game. If he can restrict the scoring rate and create pressure at one end, he could help West Indies’ pace bowlers find opportunities at the other.

3. Akeal Hosein

Akeal Hosein completes the list as another left-arm spinner who can trouble India’s batters with control and tactical variation. The experienced bowler was part of West Indies’ playing XI in Ranchi and offers captain Shai Hope a reliable option during the powerplay and middle overs.

Hosein’s main strength is his ability to maintain a disciplined line while varying his pace. Against an aggressive Indian top order, he will need to avoid offering width and prevent the batters from accessing their preferred scoring areas.

The battle against Abhishek Sharma could be particularly interesting. Abhishek generally looks to put pressure on bowlers early, so Hosein’s ability to stay accurate and change his pace could determine whether India get another explosive start. If he can keep the left-hander quiet for a few deliveries, he may force him to take a greater risk.

Hosein can also test India’s right-handed batters by changing his angle and attacking the stumps. On a surface expected to favour stroke-makers, his control will be essential. He must also be prepared to adjust his plans if dew makes gripping the ball more difficult.

His experience in T20 cricket makes him an important part of West Indies’ strategy. If Hosein and Motie can keep India’s scoring in check during the middle overs, the visitors could enter the final phase with a realistic chance of restricting the hosts to a manageable total.
