India will look to bounce back in the third T20I against West Indies after suffering a six-wicket defeat in Ranchi. With the series tied at 1-1, the Shreyas Iyer-led side cannot afford another performance in which its bowlers struggle to defend a massive total. Although India scored 249/5 in the second match, West Indies chased down the target with nine balls to spare.
The result highlighted a clear contrast between India’s batting strength and its bowling concerns. Rather than overhaul a batting order that has already produced substantial runs, India should focus on strengthening the bowling combination, improving execution and developing specific plans for West Indies’ aggressive batters.
Here are 3 changes India must make for 3rd T20I vs West Indies:
1. Bring Ravi Bishnoi into the playing XI
India should consider bringing leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi into the playing XI to add a specialist wicket-taking option. The team management could assess replacing Naman Dhir, although his contribution with the ball in the opening match makes the decision a difficult one.
Bishnoi’s variations and ability to attack the stumps could offer India a different option in the middle overs. Against a West Indies lineup that has shown its willingness to attack spin, India need a bowler who can force batters to take risks rather than simply contain the scoring.
The Ranchi defeat also exposed the danger of allowing set batters to dictate the tempo. Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford were able to build momentum and accelerate dramatically during their partnership. India need to create wicket-taking opportunities before such partnerships become difficult to break.
Bishnoi could be particularly useful against right-handed batters, using his googly and changes of pace to disrupt their rhythm. However, his inclusion should not be viewed as a guaranteed solution: he will need support from attacking fields and disciplined bowling at both ends.
India must also assess the conditions at Indore before finalising their combination. If the pitch offers little assistance to spin, retaining an additional pace option could be the better choice.
2. Rework the death-bowling plans
India’s second major priority should be improving their execution at the death. Arshdeep Singh has conceded 79 runs across the first two matches while taking just one wicket, according to reporting ahead of the third T20I. That return underlines the need for better control, particularly when opponents are attacking from the outset.
However, dropping Arshdeep outright would be a drastic response. He remains an experienced left-arm option who can bowl yorkers and vary his angles. India should instead reassess how he is used and ensure that the attack has a clear plan for the final overs.
Against powerful hitters such as Rutherford, repeatedly missing the yorker length can be costly. India should mix full deliveries with well-directed slower balls and occasional hard lengths, while avoiding predictable patterns that allow batters to line up their shots.
The captain and bowlers must also agree on field placements before the over begins. If the plan is to bowl wide outside off stump, the field should protect the likely scoring areas. If the bowler targets the stumps, the field needs to account for the straight hit.
India should avoid relying on one bowler to rescue the innings. Mayank Yadav’s pace can create opportunities for early breakthroughs, while the other bowlers must be prepared to execute their roles according to the match situation.
3. Dismiss Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford early
India cannot afford to let West Indies’ key batters settle into another match-defining partnership. Hope’s 102 off 45 balls and Rutherford’s 84 off 37 deliveries turned a challenging chase into a dominant victory in Ranchi. Their ability to combine composure with explosive hitting was the biggest difference between the teams.
India should therefore develop individual plans for both batters rather than depend on a generic defensive approach.
Against Hope, bowlers should focus on changing their lengths and denying him predictable deliveries in his preferred scoring zones. Early variations in pace and an attacking field could force him to manufacture shots instead of allowing him to play comfortably.
Rutherford presents a different challenge because of his power and ability to accelerate quickly. Bowlers should avoid feeding his hitting arc and use changes of pace intelligently, particularly when he is looking to target the boundary. Crucially, India must not become so defensive that they offer easy singles and allow him to retain the strike.
Fielding will be equally important. India cannot afford dropped catches or missed opportunities against batters who punish even small errors. Sharp work in the outfield and quicker decision-making could help prevent another late-innings surge.
