A dead rubber third ODI between India (IND) and the West Indies (WI) had a lot of entertainment on offer for the fans at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, October 03 as the visitors signed off the series with a consolatory win. The Caribbeans won by five wickets and ten balls remaining, chasing down the 352-run target set by the hosts on a batting-friendly wicket in New Chandigarh.

Earlier in the day, India won the toss and opted to bat first to test themselves. The pitch looked a very difficult to bat on, especially in the first half of the innings. Skipper Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli departed in the third over, but thanks to a stable partnership by Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Indian innings came back on track. Later, KL Rahul made his ninth ODI century, a blazing 87-ball 129*, to help India post 351-7 at the end of 50 overs.

As the run chase began, the Indians were quick to strike, with Mohammed Siraj castling John Campbell over. But Shai Hope, coming as Campbell’s opening partner in the match, combined crucial partnerships with Amir Jangoo, Sherfane Rutherford and Keemo Paul to help the Caribbean side record their most successful run chase in the format. This ensured that they also avoided a series whitewash, with the series line reading 2-1 in India’s favour.

Top Batting Performance: Shai Hope

Skipper Shai Hope had to open as Jewel Andrew injured himself while fielding. Hope knew that his team may fall a batter short due to Andrew’s injury, so he took the onus upon himself and stood his guard strong at one end. With an unbeaten 162 off just 143 balls, Hope stayed true to his name and guided the Windies to a fantastic five-wicket win. His sensational knock was decorated with 17 boundaries and three sixes.

Top Bowling Performance: Jayden Seales

Jayden Seales’ double-wicket over early on in the match ensured that Gill and Kohli went back to the hut without troubling the scorers much. In fact, he completely bamboozled Kohli as the in-form veteran batter departed for a golden duck. Seales came back in his spell to put a break on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s knock, providing yet another crucial breakthrough. After ten overs, Seales had conceded 62 runs to finish with three wickets in his basket.
