‘I was surprised by the one-year contract’ – Ravichandran Ashwin questions Zaheer Khan’s CSK deal

Ravichandran Ashwin has questioned the decision to offer Zaheer Khan only a one-year contract as head coach of Chennai Super Kings. The appointment came after CSK parted ways with Stephen Fleming following a dismal 2026 IPL season, ending an 18-year association with the franchise. Zaheer’s first season as CSK’s head coach will be the final year of the three-year cycle before the mega auction.

Ashwin expressed his concerns about how the contract structure could affect the franchise’s long-term planning. According to the former India off-spinner, the one-year deal raises questions about player development and strategic continuity at the franchise.

“Say Sanju Samson or Ruturaj Gaikwad or Shivam Dube, when they first heard this news that Zaheer Khan is the coach for one year, how can these players go to him and collaborate by telling him all that has happened over the last couple of years and the things they can improve on in the next two to three years when he is on a one-year contract? If these players say to Zaheer that Kartik Sharma is an excellent player and can bat at No.4, and Zaheer plays Kartik at the position for five games and he fails miserably in all five, Zaheer might think, I have only one year, and I have to deliver results, which could lead to him dropping Kartik Sharma,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

How a one-year contract could impact player development?

Ashwin elaborated on how a longer contract would enable different decision-making. He explained that a coach with a three-to-four-year tenure would approach player development differently, giving struggling players more opportunities to improve rather than making immediate changes to chase short-term results.

“But if Zaheer knew he had three to four years, he would give Kartik Sharma a long rope in the same situation and groom him at No.4 and make him a champion cricketer. So, I was surprised by the one-year contract. I also heard that many coaches did not agree to this one-year contract. But I am not sure how feasible short-term contracts are,” Ashwin said.

The challenges of short-term coaching appointments

Ashwin acknowledged the broader difficulties that CSK faced in finalizing a coaching appointment under the one-year contract structure. He recognised that the short-term nature of the role created obstacles for the franchise in attracting experienced coaches to the position.

“Finalizing a coach wasn’t easy at all for CSK, mainly because of this one-year contract. It is tough for the coach. The IPL quality is so high that even if a coach does everything, results are not guaranteed. But we also don’t know the discussions CSK has had with Zaheer. They may have agreed to a fresh contract with him after the next season, based on how next year goes,” Ashwin said.

Zaheer Khan’s appointment followed MS Dhoni’s recommendation, with the management team comprising Rupa and Ruturaj Gaikwad agreeing to the choice. Zaheer previously worked with Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor in 2025 and served as director of cricket operations with Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022. CSK have struggled since their 2023 title run, missing the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.
