Marnus Labuschagne retained in Australia’s Test squad for South Africa tour

Marnus Labuschagne has kept his place in Australia’s Test squad for the upcoming three-match tour of South Africa. Cricket Australia named a 16-man group on September 7, with Cooper Connolly, Michael Neser and Matthew Kuhnemann also included alongside the retained number-three batter.

Labuschagne’s selection comes despite scores of 1, 31 and 4 across his three innings against Bangladesh, and despite losing his place in Australia’s ODI squad for the tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa that precede the Test series. His Test spot has nonetheless been preserved ahead of a significant series between the top two sides in the World Test Championship standings.

The three Tests will be played in Durban from October 9 to 13, in Gqeberha from October 18 to 22, and in Cape Town from October 27 to 31. Pat Cummins leads the touring party.

George Bailey, speaking about the selection process, referenced “reintegration” as a consideration, indicating the panel has thought carefully about how certain players fit back into the Test environment after time away.

“This is a reasonably condensed three-game series, on the back of six one-day internationals, with only short breaks between each game. The squad provides balance and options for each Test and the variety of conditions we may face,” Bailey said in a statement, as quoted by Cricket.com.au.
