Gambhir, Laxman, Gill and Shreyas Iyer arrive at BCCI headquarters for review meeting

Head coach Gautam Gambhir, CoE head VVS Laxman, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill and T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer have all arrived at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday, September 3, for a critical review meeting involving the senior men’s team.

Gambhir attended in his capacity as national head coach, while Laxman joined as chief of the Centre of Excellence. Gill, who leads India in Tests and ODIs, and Iyer, the T20I captain, were also present at the venue. BCCI President Mithun Manhas and Secretary Devajit Saikia attended the meeting as well. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar was understood to be joining the proceedings via videoconferencing.

The meeting had originally been scheduled after India’s T20I series defeats in Ireland and England but was delayed owing to India’s two-Test tour of Sri Lanka. It finally convened on Thursday with all key stakeholders in attendance.

What triggered the review meeting?

India’s recent away form in white-ball cricket prompted the BCCI to call this gathering. The team lost the T20I series in Ireland 2-0 in June 2026, a result that ended a run of 16 consecutive unbeaten series. The defeat in England that followed added further urgency to the board’s decision to convene a formal review.

The meeting was delayed because India undertook a two-Test tour of Sri Lanka in the intervening period. With that assignment concluded, the board moved quickly to bring together the coaching staff, captains and selectors for a structured assessment of where the team stands.

What will the meeting cover?

Discussions at the BCCI headquarters are expected to cover an evaluation of the senior men’s team’s recent performances across formats, with an emphasis on identifying key takeaways and areas that require improvement. Injury concerns involving key players, including Hardik Pandya, are also on the agenda.

Beyond the immediate review, the meeting will focus on mapping out future plans. The upcoming multi-format tour of New Zealand, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series at home and the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup are all understood to be part of the forward-planning discussions. The presence of both format captains alongside the head coach and the Centre of Excellence chief signals the comprehensive scope of the agenda.
