Mayank Agarwal joins Durham for four County Championship games

Mayank Agarwal has signed for Durham for four matches in the closing stages of the 2026 Rothesay County Championship season. The Bangalore-born batter, aged 35, will make his debut for the club against Northamptonshire at the cinch County Ground.

Durham moved quickly to bring in Agarwal after David Bedingham was recalled to South Africa ahead of their international red ball summer. With the club chasing promotion back to Division One, securing an experienced international batter for the run-in became an immediate priority.

Agarwal is no stranger to English conditions, having previously represented Yorkshire in county cricket. That exposure to the English game adds to his value as a short-term recruit for Durham’s promotion push.

“We are delighted to have Mayank joining us for our County Championship run in. With David Bedingham returning to South Africa ahead of their international red ball summer it was important we acted by recruiting a high-class international cricketer for the remainder of the season. Mayank is a hugely talented batter who has a superb first-class record, we look forward to him contributing to Durham as we look to secure our return to Division One of the County Championship,” Head Coach Ryan Campbell said in a statement.

What does Mayank Agarwal bring to Durham?

Agarwal’s red ball credentials are well-established. He has been a Karnataka stalwart since 2011 and is approaching 9,000 first-class career runs, with 21 hundreds to his name in that format. His personal best of an unbeaten 304, set in 2017, speaks to his ability to build match-defining innings.

At Test level, Agarwal has earned 21 caps for India, accumulating approximately 1,500 runs. His highest score in that format is 243, made against Bangladesh in Indore in 2019. His white-ball record is equally substantial, with more than 5,000 T20 runs to his credit. He was also part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad that lifted the IPL title in 2025.

Durham are currently competing in Division Two of the 2026 County Championship. The club has identified the final four fixtures of the campaign as decisive for their promotion ambitions, and Agarwal’s recruitment is a direct response to Bedingham’s unavailability during that critical period.
