Yashasvi Jaiswal found himself at the centre of an on-field confrontation during India’s second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on August 23, 2026. The incident occurred in the 17th over of India’s first innings when Jaiswal was dismissed for 45 off 53 balls, a knock that included nine boundaries. A good-length delivery moved back sharply and caught the inside edge of his bat, deflecting onto the stumps.

What happened during the dismissal and confrontation?

The dismissal sparked a heated exchange between Jaiswal and Sri Lankan bowler Fernando, who directed a fiery send-off towards the departing batter. Jaiswal paused during his walk back to the pavilion, reacted to the send-off and turned back towards Fernando. The two players came face to face at close range, and other Sri Lankan fielders moved quickly to separate the pair and defuse the tension.

“If you don’t know what he said then please don’t make your judgment. If anyone cross the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply,” Jaiswal responded to a video on social media.

The incident came during a Test match where India held a 1-0 series lead after winning the first Test in Galle by 165 runs. India named a changed side for the Colombo fixture, with Saransh Jain earning his first Test cap. Captain Shubman Gill confirmed at the toss that Kuldeep Yadav had been ruled out due to an infection, prompting the selection change.

What was the match situation when the altercation took place?

India chose to bat after winning the toss at the Sinhalese Sports Club. The morning session proved difficult for the visitors, with both openers back in the pavilion before the interval. Jaiswal’s dismissal by Fernando left India at 66 for 2.

KL Rahul had fallen earlier in the session for 18 runs, edging a wide delivery from Lahiru Kumara through to the wicketkeeper. Devdutt Padikkal came to the crease after Rahul’s exit and survived a nervy moment early in his innings when a thick edge flew through the slip cordon without finding a fielder. With Jaiswal then removed by Fernando, India faced a challenging position heading into the afternoon session. But, they closed with 300 runs for the loss of five wickets at stumps on Day 1.
