Harbhajan Singh has defended Gautam Gambhir’s coaching approach and endorsed Shubman Gill as India’s ideal captain, addressing ongoing scrutiny of the team’s Test cricket performance. The former India spinner made these comments on August 13, 2026, as India navigates mixed results across formats under Gambhir’s leadership.

Gambhir has overseen significant white-ball success, guiding India to victory in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and 2025 Asia Cup. However, India’s Test side has experienced heavy defeats against Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, with the latter two series resulting in home whitewashes. This contrast between white-ball dominance and Test struggles has prompted questions about Gambhir’s overall impact. The former off-spinner addressed the criticism directly, explaining Gambhir’s communication style and philosophy.

“For many people, Gautam might say bitter things but what he speaks is the bitter truth. Now, many people can’t digest the truth, and perhaps the tone of his comments makes people feel that he is a slightly difficult person,” Harbhajan Singh said as quoted by myKhel.

Why Gambhir’s direct approach divides opinion

Harbhajan urged observers not to judge Gambhir superficially based on his public persona. He outlined Gambhir’s core philosophy as one centred on aggressive intent and winning mentality. According to Harbhajan, Gambhir’s approach to cricket is defined by a ‘Play To Win’ philosophy, according to Harbhajan.

“Don’t judge a book by its cover. He is a brilliant guy. He has got a good sense of how the game should be played. He is someone who will not mind a defeat if the intent is to win a match. If a team goes for a draw, probably he won’t take it,” Harbhajan said.

Gill’s captaincy record and potential

Shubman Gill currently serves as India’s Test and ODI captain as of August 2026. Under Gill’s leadership, India’s ODI teams have lost series against Australia, New Zealand, and England. Gill did draw an ODI series 2-2 in England in the previous year, demonstrating some competitive performances despite mixed overall results.

Harbhajan expressed strong confidence in Gill’s suitability for the captaincy role. ‘The ideal man to lead the country’ is how Harbhajan described Gill as India’s new Test and ODI captain. He cited Gill’s England series performance as evidence of his leadership credentials and potential.

“Success doesn’t come overnight. We have seen how he stamped his credentials on captaincy in England last year (India drew series 2-2). That was a testament to his abilities as a leader and a batter. He scored more runs than anybody. I rate him highly. The team looked committed. There will be ups and downs but he is a top cricketer and has a great cricket brain,” Harbhajan concluded.
