Namibia cricket chair urges Associates to look at bigger picture in ODI World Cup restructuring

Rudie van Vuuren, President of Cricket Namibia since 2018, has urged Associate nations to consider the broader picture when assessing the restructuring of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Van Vuuren made his remarks at the 2027 World Cup launch event in Johannesburg, where he acknowledged concerns from the Associate community but argued the changes carry logic when viewed in full context.

Van Vuuren was recently elected as ICC Associate Member Director for a two-year term at the ICC Annual Conference held in Edinburgh. Speaking in that capacity, he addressed the new Super Series format for the 2027 ODI World Cup, under which two teams are sent home having played only two matches each.

“We must put it into context. If you look at viewership numbers or if you look at popularity for ODI cricket, we don’t really know where it is going. I do see more opportunities for Associates in the T20 world,” said Vuuren as quoted by Cricinfo.

Van Vuuren also noted that the funding mechanisms will change towards T20 World Cups and spoke of bringing more Associates into high-level cricket the T20 way, signalling a structural shift in how the ICC plans to develop Associate cricket going forward.

Why are Associates concerned about the 2027 ODI World Cup format?

The Super Series format for the 2027 ODI World Cup has drawn criticism from several Associate nations, who feel the structure does not give qualifying teams a genuine chance to compete. With sides exiting the tournament after just two outings, there is little room to build momentum or recover from an early setback. Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus gave voice to this concern through World Cricketers’ Association.

“we all accept that you have to earn the right to be there, we also want qualification to provide a real opportunity to compete on the biggest stage. This follows a long history of limited opportunity at Associate level. The chairman (Jay Shah) has a big vision to grow cricket into the biggest sport in the world,” Erasmus said.

Former Netherlands captain Scott Edwards added a pointed critique, saying the ICC talks a lot about growing the game globally but decisions like this make it harder for Associate nations to play against the best teams in the world. Scotland captain Richie Berrington also called for greater involvement in decision-making, saying, We should be meaningfully consulted on decisions that have significant impacts on the game and on players’ careers. Van Vuuren acknowledged these concerns but maintained that the overall direction is sound.

“If you understand the bigger picture it makes sense. If you want to do that, you have to grow the Associate teams. And to do that, you have to create more opportunities for Associates. The chairman (Jay Shah) has a big vision to grow cricket into the biggest sport in the world,” said Vuuren.

What changes are planned for T20 World Cup qualification and ICC governance?

Beyond the ODI World Cup format, the ICC is restructuring how Associate nations qualify for T20 cricket at the highest level. The 2028 T20 World Cup will introduce a global qualifier to replace the existing regional qualifier system.

“That’s going to be an interesting one. As I understand it, the global qualifier is an interim step. There’s going to be another structure post this qualifier for T20. And that is linked to the funding structure of the ICC,” said Vuuren.

On the broader governance calendar, the ICC expects a McKinsey report on the future of the game to be presented at its November meetings. A Future Tours Programme workshop is also scheduled for September to plan the next fixture cycle covering 2027-2031. These discussions are expected to shape how Associate nations are integrated into international cricket across both formats in the years ahead.
